Our Staff

Our Instructors & Staff Members

Our instructors have spent many years devoted to training in the arts of Karate, Gracie Jiu Jitsu and other martial arts and have attained a level of expertise to qualify them as teachers as well as mentors.

Through extensive testing, certification, and tournament level competition, our staff members have attained mastery in this martial art and now enjoy sharing their skill and passing it on to their students. The following is a listing of Metro Karate & Jiu Jitsu Academy's instructors and other staff members beginning with our Sensei, Mr. David Toft.:

Anthony S. Rockwell Jr., MBA  (7th Degree Black Belt (Sensei)) 
Mr. Rockwell is the head instructor and founder of Metro Karate Academy which was opened in 1992. In 2004, Mr. Rockwell was inducted in the U.S.A. Martial Arts hall of fame and was awarded the American Tae Kwon Do Master of the year. He has been studying the martial arts since 1983, and he has achieved the level of 7th Degree Black Belt. In 1987, he began his teaching career, and he has been a community leader and role model ever since. Mr. Rockwell was a state, regional and national tournament champion in forms, sparring, and weapons for many years. His greatest strength as an instructor is his ability to connect with even the most reserved student enabling students to feel welcome and relaxed within the karate program.

He earned a BA Degree from Augsburg College and his MBA at Capella University.

David Toft  (Head Instructor)
David has more than 17 years of martial arts experience and has won numerous tournaments in both Karate and Jiu Jitsu across the state. With that experience David has turned his focus to helping others develop their own skills in self-defense with an emphasis on better physical and mental health.

Earning His Gracie Blue Belt in the fall of 2012 Devante's natural ability to rapidly digest the Combative curriculum fast tracked him for a Gracie Blue Belt! A fact that is only surpassed by his instinctive ability to help others learn difficult moves in the shortest amount of time!

Ben Sherlock  (Instructor)
Ben started his training at Metro Karate more than 5 years ago, and has won several competitions to round out his Karate training. He was among the first students to join the Jiu jitsu program. From the beginning Ben has always shown a dedication to helping others. It was his dedication that earned his Gracie Blue Belt in early 2012 and take his place as the first Assistant instructor in our Gracie Jiu Jitsu program.
