During my daughter’s 4th grade school year there was one particular boy who bullied her frequently. he bullied other girls as well, but my daughter appeared to be his favorite target, probably because she is quite petite. (At 4 feet, 11 inches she weighted 57 pounds.) Although the adult school staff was doing what they could, this boy was hurting her in the classroom and, more often, on the playground. My daughter was afraid to go to school. She did not feel safe there.
Then she started karate at your academy. She loved it form the start and caught on quickly. I was amazed at her rapid growth in karate skills and self-confidence. Her confidence was boosted even more when she won trophies at your tournaments!
By the end of the school year, she no longer feared the bully. She knows that she couldn’t use karate in school, but she could ‘block’ strikes and defend herself. She found an inner strength. I am so proud of the girl you have helped her to become!
I have been attending MKA for almost 5 years now and am in my 40's. Before coming to MKA, I had no interest in learning or participating in the martial arts. I thought karate was for men and boys who wanted to get out their aggressions. I was wrong! I initially started because I was new to the area, and was looking for different activities to fill my time and meet new people. I signed up for the 2 month special, and thought I would move on to a new activity when that was up. As you can see, 5 years later, that wasn’t the case. I am now a 2nd degree black belt, and I plan on continuing in karate as long as I can. I love karate for many reasons, not the least of which is the benefits of the physical exercise. It is a fantastic way to get in shape and stay in shape. Another of my favorite things is realizing that you can do anything you set your mind to…the mental aspect of karate…whether it’s a new kick you’re learning, a new kata, or advanced belt testing, all of which are not easy, but when you make it through, and do it, there is a feeling of accomplishment that can’t be matched! To me, that is something that you can take into all aspect of your life…the mental toughness you develop! As a woman, I appreciate the fact that I do feel more confident should I run into a situation that I may need to use some physical force to get out of. Hopefully I will never have to use it, but I know that it’s there if I need it. I know people say this a lot, but if I can do it anyone can!! You don’t need to be in good shape to start, karate will get you there…you don’t need to be an athlete, or a kid… you can be a middle aged adult, who’s never done karate before, and still succeed!! I recommend it to anyone!
